Is Going With Your Gut Decision Always The Right Decision?

You’ve heard the saying to ‘just follow your gut’ in times of indecisiveness where you don’t know what decision to make, but according to new research, you should always do what your intuition tells you to do, even if you doubt that the decision you make is actually the right one.

While that knowing feeling currently occurring in your gut may in actual fact just be your stomach growling, listening to your gut is a proven recipe in getting the best resolutions in life, even if you are starving and craving a Pizza.

Laura Huang, an Associate Professor writes that during high stakes and often stressful situations where there simply isn’t enough information to make a reliable prediction, going with your gut is more often then not a sure-fire way to get positive and productive results. Professor Huang goes on to write that ‘’My recent research suggests that gut feel can in fact be useful, especially in highly uncertain circumstances where further data gathering and analysis won’t sway you one way or another’’.

She went on to add ‘’There are some things you can’t quantify and sometimes you’re using your intuition to do something other than what the data told you to do. And when that’s the case, your gut feel can help you make a bold decision’’.

What is a gut feeling?

Having a gut feeling is basically another term for Intuition and is described as the ability to understand something instinctively without the need for conscious reasoning. The best way to describe having a gut feeling in a scenario is when a person is met with a situation in which they have to make a decision. This kind of decision could be anything from deciding what to order for lunch, to a decision with a far greater impact and risk of repercussion such as handing in your notice for a job in which you are unhappy in, to applying for a licence and pursuing a new career.

While its often said that you should listen to advice, research statistics and think things through with great accuracy while weighing out the pros and cons, when it comes down to it, most people in these critical scenarios often just go with their gut feeling and whatever feels right at the same.

While following your gut is always good advice to follow, when it comes down to it, evaluating your thoughts and weighing up your options is always something to consider, that includes listening to your inner sceptic. Intuition is basically experience garnered from life experience and while facts and figures are critical, nothing beats the wisdom you learn through the trials and tribulations of life.

Ultimately, if the prospect of pursuing a new career or packing up everything and going on an adventure makes you feel good, follow your gut, it will always lead you in the right direction.
